A Lesson in Kantha

As a way to educate our customers on some of the art forms found at Global Village Gifts, we would like to offer a series of crafting nights featuring commonly used artistry among our global artisans.

Please join us for an exciting evening of kantha taught by our talented volunteer, Sue Zollinger. This class is suitable for beginners and will cover a variety of running stitch techniques that can be used to give old fabrics new life.

β€œIn Sanskrit, the word kantha simply means rags.

For centuries, poor Bengali women have taken their discarded cloth and sewn them together with a simple running stitch to create something new. The functional kantha dorokha ("two-sided quilt") was not a work of art, but simply what the poorest families used to keep warm. Kantha also had an aspect of intimacy. Old cloth in Bangladesh is said to keep the user safe from harm.

For generations of Bengali women, kantha has been a form of quiet expression. Even the most practical kantha is creative and spontaneous in nature.”

All supplies will be provided for, and light refreshments will be served.

Enjoy an evening of education, art, and socializing! Participants will bring home a hand-stitched dishtowel or journal cover.

Cost of attendance is $15/person. Space is limited, so purchase your tickets before they run out!
